Purse shopping

There's nothing like purse shopping to show me that I'm a crotchety old lady who's too set in her ways.

Let me explain.

My current purse is a $15 Target clearance bag that I've had for at least a year (maybe two. I don't remember). It's served me well, but it's starting to fall apart. The straps are fraying, zippers are falling off, and there's a giant tear in the lining. I've been living with it because I'm cheap, but I had a full sippy cup of milk leak into my bag about a week ago and now I'm just done with it. I'm not going to spend time and effort cleaning spoiled milk out of a purse in such crappy shape. Around this same time it occurred to me that I still have birthday money burning a hole in my pocket, so I decided it's time to get a new purse. I want to get a nice one that will last for a while, instead of my usual cheap, clearance bags.

The trouble I'm having is that I don't love anything that's available right now. I mean, I like some of the stuff I've looked at, but I don't love any of it. If I'm spending more than $20 on a purse, I'd better love it. There are tons of cute totes out there, but those don't meet my requirement of more than one internal purse section, and most were bigger than I wanted. I found a super-cute Cynthia Rowley tote that would have been perfect if it had more than one pocket. I also saw some really nice Michael Kors bags that didn't have multiple pockets. The one that did was gold, and I just couldn't do it. Most of the bags that met my interior requirements had all kinds of hardware (zippers, buckles, etc.) on the outside, which I'm not a fan of. My BFF sent me a Coach purse for Birthmas that's small enough that the lack of multiple pockets wouldn't be an issue (I think), but the straps aren't long enough to go over my shoulder. I've been using this one, but it can't be my everyday purse. It would drive me nuts. Basically, I haven't been able to convince myself that something that deviates from my personal preferences might end up being an ok choice. I mean, all I want is a mostly-plain, chic bag with multiple internal sections and shoulder straps! This is apparently a lot to ask for.

It was at the end of my trip through the fourth store that the realization that I'm old and crotchety hit me. I'm far to set in my purse-ways. I'm pretty sure I'd end up liking a purse that isn't exactly like my previous twenty purses, but I'm not willing to give something new a try. My purse style is my mom jeans. No matter how out of style they are, I love them and refuse to give them up.

So my purse search continues. I give myself about a week before I give up on finding a nice one and go back to the Target clearance section. Mom jeans purse for life!

It is also okay to have a Target Clearance Section purse style. I sometimes think that's the smart way to do it: so much easier to ditch the bag when the milk spills.

Did you go to Nordstrom Rack? I almost always find purses there that I love alot. If not, I second Swistle - some of my faves are from Target clearance, and if you're nervous about hating something, it might be better to start with something cheap and see if you can learn to love a different style.

I got my last purse on Zulily. Designer bag for less than Target clearance!

I love the IDEA of purses and purse shopping....but then I start looking at the purses, and they're all so similar, and there are so many choices! And I hear people talking about how much they LOVE their super-expensive purses, and I just don't get it. I guess I'll just stick to my re-usable, all-purpose bags =).
