How do you make yourself thankful for something you really don't want at all? (I'm not talking a bad birthday present or something, either, where a semi-sincere "Oh, I love it!" will suffice). This is something I'm really struggling with right now, and any tips, advice, or suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

Tell the person kindly, no.
Maybe try putting yourself in the shoes of someone who may really want it, but can't ever have it. Realize how much they struggle and how upset they get, and realize that you were given something they can't have.
Accept that sometimes you won't be thankful for things right away; sometimes the thankful part comes after you realize that you really wanted it all along, and that's okay.
